HD Radio Coverage - How Far will HD Radio Carry?

I received an interesting question from one of my visitors the other day. He asked. "I live in a rural area outside Dallas, TX. On my way to work I begin to lose the Dallas stations I love to listen to. Will HD radio offer more or less range? Will upgrading to HD allow me to listen to my station from a further distance?

I asked another of my other visitors about HD Radio's range. He works for an HD Radio manufacturer and basically said, "it depends." He also pointed out that there are a number of factors that go into an HD Radio signal, including interference, the height of the station's antenna, the transmit power level, etc. He went on to write, "For FM, digital is generally received out to the 45-50 dBu field strength contour." This means, you would have to get a coverage map of the station to translate that into miles. Go to the following link to find a list of stations within a given zip code that have a field strength of more than 50 dBu. -- http://www.radio-locator.com." Enter your city and you will get list of all the stations in your market.

Once you have the stations, just click on the little, yellow icon, and you'll get more information about the station. About halfway down this page. you'll also find the station's coverage map.
