Do we buy radios or things with radios in them?
March 4, 2007 08:29

Holland Cooke had a great article recently in RWonline.. He made some very important points about HD technology radio and why it hasn't taken off to date. Some of this reasons were obvious, i.e., too expensive vs. conventional radios, the popularity of iPods, etc.

However, he had a couple of other points I thought were both important and interesting. First, there is still confusion among consumers about HD technology radio and satellite radio. In Cooke's words, "Research already demonstrates that many listeners confuse HD Radio with satellite radio. Several retail sales people in stores I visited during the holiday shopping frenzy didn't get it straight."

His second, and I think most interesting point, was that people don't buy radios, they buy things with radios in them such as cars and alarm clocks. What this suggests is that iBiquity needs to be pounding hard on Ford, GM, Toyota, Honda and the other big car manufacturers to include HD technology radios in their cars ... and not as an option.

Cooke also says that for HD technology radios to really take off, the big broadcasters have to do a better job of creating the kind of back-end buzz that made the iPod such an icon.

He has a bunch of other interesting things to say. Click on the URL link to read the whole story.
