HD radio continues to grow as more stations are added by Clear Channel and CBS

In a recent announcement, CBS radio says that stations in four more markets have chosen their HD2 programming. The stations are in Austin, Buffalo, Rochester and West Palm Beach and are expected to launch their programming sometime this fall.

Clear Channel radio reports that it already has more than 300 stations broadcasting in HD. digital quality radio. Furthermore, the Corporation says that by 2007, 95% of Clear Channel radio stations in the top 100 markets will be broadcasting digital quality, HD radio.

Also, iBiquity, the founding father of HD radio, reports that more than 975 stations around the U.S. are now broadcasting HD radio.

So, if there are no HD radio stations in your market, the patient. It looks like there should be some in your area very soon -- unless you live in a very remote area.

In a related story, iBiquity's CEO, Bob Struble, said the by the end of 2006, there will be 1,200 stations broadcasting HD radio streams, and hundreds of thousands of HD sets in US homes. Retailers such as Radio Shack are clearing shelf space for HD sets, and broadcasters have formed the HD Digital Radio Alliance to promote the concept to consumers.  Plus, there’s consensus in the industry that they’ve got a killer app with the development of second stream HD2 channels, with alternate programming for niche audiences.
