Is HD Radio "dead on arrival?"
August 8, 2006 14:17

Public radio producer Stephen Hill, host of the popular electronic/space music show Hearts of Space, thinks that High Definition Radio is dead on arrival, and that podcasting and other Internet audio options dug its grave.

Of course, Stephen's web site is called Podcasting News, so maybe he could be, well, a bit prejudiced, eh?

On the other hand, let's see what else Stephen has to say. "Of the major usage trends that are driving the growth of Internet radio -- new "long tail" niche and alternative content, on-demand delivery, user-created content, podcasting (subscriptions and portability), and time-shifting -- only time-shifting is even doable with HD, and then only in a relatively crippled way due to memory and interface constraints."

Let's give Stephen credit. He may be exactly right. On the other hand, his alternatives -- 'long tail' niche and alternative content,on-demand delivery, user-created content and podcasting – all sounds great but it also sounds time consuming and a little far-fetched. Sure, there will always be leading-edge types with the time and interest required to download, load and listen to a lot of podcasts and "user created content" (I'm still not sure what that means), but what percentage of the general population will want to take the time vs. clicking on a radio.

What's your thoughts?

The heck with the grapevine. I heard it on the radio.

I was listening to our "50,000 watt, voice of the Rocky Mountains," KOA Radio, yesterday when what did to my wondering ears appear? It was a pitch for HD AM Radio. I thought it was interesting that an AM station was promoting HD Radio as it is usually the FM outlets that are flogging it.

On another note, Clear Channel, the behemoth of radio corporations (which, incidentally does own KOA), has announced that 300 of its stations are now broadcasting HD Radio.

Also, omaha.com has reported that Radiosophy will begin shipping its MultiStream HD Radio this month. I have not been yet able to get confirmation of this from my contacts at Radiosophy so don't know for a fact that this is the case.
