Grumble, grumble, grumble

I had high definition TV installed this past weekend -- the picture is just terrific. In fact, I had a friend over yesterday who watched my LCD set for a few minutes and then said, "this picture is so good, it's hard to believe it's real."

But the more I watched high def TV, the more I wished that high def (HD Radio) was easily available and with half as many models to choose from . I've been following HD Radio for nearly nine months now, and in all that time I don't think I've seen more than four or five new receivers introduced – including just one tabletop set.

I was pleased to see that Radiosophy is just about to start shipping is MultStream HD Radio. This receiver's initial price is expected to be about $267 and I think this is fair price, considering how versatile their receiver is (you can find a complete description of the MultiStream on my web site, hd-radio-home.com).

The broadcast industry pledged $200 million to promote HD Radio this year on its stations. Me thinks a better use of the money would be to have given it to a dozen or so companies to help underwrite the cost of developing HD radios.

What do you think?

Some good HD news out of last week's Conclave
July 16, 2006 08:40

Conclave is a "learning conference" about radio that is held each year in Minneapolis. One of the speakers at this year's Conclave was Don Kelly, iBiquity's Director of Broadcast Marketing..

Don has some pretty positive things to say about the near future of HD Radio. For example, he says that by year's end, there will be 1,200 stations equipped to broadcast HD Radio. He also believes that there will be an HD Radio car converter on the market by Thanksgiving (for use with standard analog radios). He also believes there will be a transportable unit with a car kit on the market by later this summer.

Kelly said he thinks that HD units will be in the low $200 range soon, "When more manufacturers like Sony jump in, prices will come down dramatically," Kelly said. "And when bigger box retailers such as Best Buy are able to offer the 'sweet spot’ price-point of $99, then they'll carry them."
