Will this year's fourth quarter spell the success or death of HD Radio?
June 27, 2006 11:24

I ran across an article by By Anthony Bruno the other day that suggested this year's fourth quarter sales could be the make or break for HD Radio.

To quote Anthony, "To date, HD radio has been little more that a footnote on the digital music landscape, overshadowed by satellite radio, podcasting and Internet streaming.

"But the industry is prepping a major holiday sales push for a range of new HD devices expected to hit the market in the coming months.

"Currently, only about 100,000 HD radio receivers have been shipped. According to Pat Walsh, CFO of iBiquity Digital he primary provider of HD radio technology that figure is expected to jump to 500,000 before the end of the year."

The article went on to say HD Radio manufacturers cannot afford to delay new product roll out much beyond the holiday selling season as it would be the equivalent of giving podcasting and other forms of audio delivery another year to chip away even more at terrestrial radio.

Sounds about right to me.
