Rob, we share your pain

Rob Pergoraro, the Washington Post's tech columnist wrote yesterday, ""Two years ago, I took an HD Radio receiver out for a spin, driving from here to Philly to check out the sound of this new technology, which overlays digital signals on existing FM and AM frequencies. Despite the paucity of HD programming at the time, I liked it; FM sounded a little sharper but AM sounded unimaginably better.

"After writing that column, I decided that I'd have to look for HD Radio compatibility in my next receiver and figured that I wouldn't have long to wait.

"I'm still waiting.

The Boston Acoustics Recepter clock radio I reviewed yesterday is nice, but I'm not going to plug that into my TV. Yet my only other option is a $1,900 (!) Yamaha receiver, and the folks at iBiquity Digital, the company that developed HD Radio, don't seem to think there will be a cheaper option for at least the rest of this year."

Yes, Rob, we hear you. We HD Radio fans are at once optimistic about the number of stations now broadcasting HD Radio and HD2 channels, and VERY frustrated with the lack of low-cost receivers.

One of the receivers I have been anxiously awaiting is Radiosophy's MultiStream HD Radio It would seem to offer a lot of function at a nice price. The problem is that I have been anxiously awaiting this radio for nearly five months. It just makes me wonder. It seems like there's a new video device of some kind on the market every month but no HD Radios.

Are HD Radios that hard to build? Do the electronics manufacturers just think there really is no market for HD Radios? Is price point an issue, i.e., can nobody build an HD Radio that would sell for less than $199.00?

If you have answers to any of these questions, I would certainly like to hear from you. (Go to URL)
